I think that computer programming was not so essential and beneficial in electrical engineering previously as it is now. Drastic increments in computers application needs programming skill in every engineer irrelavent to his field.
As for electrical engineer ,any of basic C-Languages like C,C++,java.. he should know. Because programming is required in simulator software’s used in electrical engineering like MATLAB,P-spice, cvavr etc. Along with these ,if u know Data structure and some advanced programming ,then this will assist you to build some software’s based on electrical engineering.
If you are thinking of pursuing a degree in Electronics or Electronics and Communication engineering (which are considered off shoots of electrical engineering) I think this answer might provide you with some insight .
Most circuit simulation software’s are quite easy once you know the basics of electronics and current flow, these software’s might ask you to only input some basic data parameters nothing big.
On the other hand software tools like MATLAB or scilab require that you have some amount of basic programming knowledge such as how to implement loops arrays, structures etc. Despite this most of the work can be done with the in built functions.
If you plan to pursue something related to vlsi/embedded systems then you might want to look at VHDL and embedded C (to begin with) although when it comes to micro processors and controllers its better that you have knowledge about machine level programming which provides you with much more options than the ones provided by the in built functions and api’s in embedded C.
From a recruitment point of view it’s good if you know how to program using python and java at the least along with C/C++. Learning how to program in these languages might also help you out in say image and video processing where the open source software which most students use support these languages.
If you are worried that how you might learn these many languages don’t worry most of them are covered in the course work of your program (considering an undergraduate course. Even though course work allows you to develop your programming skills from a novice to intermediate range it’s still better than nothing right! ) even so you might want to check out the courses listed before applying.
Besides this there are tons of websites which provide you opportunities to learn as well as practice coding (in) various languages.
I think that C,C++,Programming Logic Control(PLC), MATLAB, Assembly Language is most important for a good electrical engineer because in maximum electrical/electronics project mostly depends upon these things.. Especially nowadays all project are Arduino based which needs programming.
